Concrete is only ever as good as the ground beneath it. Our excavation and earthworks set the level, the falls and the compaction that decide whether everything above stays exactly where you put it.

Every project on this site — every driveway, patio, slab and pathway — begins with earthworks, because concrete is only ever as good as the ground it sits on. It is unglamorous, invisible work, and it is the single biggest determinant of whether a finished surface lasts for decades or starts to move, crack and sink within a few years. We treat earthworks not as a preliminary to get through quickly, but as the foundation of everything that follows.
Artisan Concrete carries out excavation and earthworks in-house across the Perth metropolitan area and the hills, for our own concreting projects and as a standalone service. Because the same team that prepares the ground also pours the concrete, the preparation is always done with the finished result in mind — the right level, the right falls and the right compaction for what is going on top.
If there is one principle that defines good earthworks, it is this: fill must be compacted properly, in layers, or it will settle. Loose or poorly compacted ground is the most common reason driveways crack, slabs subside and pavers sink. When ground is built up, we compact it mechanically in controlled layers rather than tipping it in and hoping. The result is a platform that behaves predictably under load — and concrete poured on a predictable platform behaves predictably too.
Water is the enemy of almost everything we build. Earthworks is where we design water's escape route, setting falls so that surface water and run-off always move away from buildings, away from slabs and toward appropriate drainage. A few millimetres of fall in the right direction, set at the earthworks stage, prevents pooling, staining, slab undermining and the slow damage that standing water does to a structure over time. These levels cannot be corrected once concrete is down, which is why we are meticulous about them from the start.
Perth blocks vary enormously — from the free-draining coastal sands of the Perth Hills to the clay and rock of the hills. Each behaves differently and demands a different approach to cut, fill, drainage and sub-base. Two decades working across these conditions means we read a site quickly, anticipate the issues, and prepare ground that suits both the soil and the structure it will carry. Sloping blocks, tight access, and the need to integrate with retaining are all part of the everyday work.
The advantage of having earthworks and concreting under one roof is accountability. There is no gap between the contractor who prepared the ground and the contractor who poured the slab, no finger-pointing if something is not right. One team set the levels, one team compacted the base, and the same team poured and finished the concrete on top — and we stand behind the whole result.
Whether you need full site preparation ahead of a build, a pad cut and prepared for a shed, a driveway sub-base, drainage corrected, or a sloping block made usable, we would be glad to assess the site and provide a clear, fixed-price quote with no obligation.
There is no shortage of people in Perth who will pour concrete. There are far fewer who treat excavation & earthworks as a craft — who care as much about the parts you will never see as the finish you will. After more than twenty years and over five hundred completed projects, our reputation rests on a simple idea: do the unglamorous work properly and the beautiful work looks after itself.
That means honest advice at the consultation, even when it costs us a sale. It means a single, accountable team from the first measure to the final seal, rather than a chain of subcontractors pointing fingers. It means transparent, itemised fixed-price quotes with no surprises on invoice day, and a clean, respectful site that we leave better than we found it. And it means standing behind the result long after the trucks have gone.
Concrete is unforgiving — the decisions made in the first hours of a pour are locked in for decades. Correct reinforcement, properly spaced control joints, falls set to the millimetre, curing managed against the Perth heat and a sealer matched to the finish are not upsells; they are the difference between a surface that still looks intentional at fifteen years and one that looks tired at five. We do them as standard because cutting them is how cheap work earns its price.
We work right across the Perth metropolitan area and into the hills — including Stoneville, Parkerville, Darlington, Mundaring, Mahogany Creek, Stoneville and the surrounding suburbs. Whether your block is free-draining coastal sand in the north or clay and rock in the hills, two decades across these conditions means we read a site quickly and prepare for what is actually under your feet. If you are nearby and not listed, ask — we very likely cover you.
Getting started is simple. Request a consultation and we will arrange a time to walk your property, understand what you are picturing, and assess access, levels, falls and drainage. We will talk through finishes honestly, bring samples where it helps, and then return a clear, transparent fixed-price quote — usually within one business day. There is no obligation and no pressure: just the information you need to make a confident decision about a surface you will live with for a very long time.
Yes. We carry out excavation and earthworks both as part of our concreting projects and as a standalone service for builders and homeowners.
Poorly compacted fill settles over time, which cracks driveways and subsides slabs. We compact fill and sub-base mechanically in layers so the ground stays stable under load.
Yes. Through cut and fill, levelling, compaction and integration with retaining, we routinely turn awkward, sloping sites into level, usable, well-drained platforms.
We set precise falls at the earthworks stage so water always drains away from structures and surfaces toward appropriate drainage. These levels are built in before any concrete is poured.
